THANKS FOR JOINING US

At the first ever AI Arts Festival, we brought together humans and robots to explore questions about AI. Is it just a new chapter in the long story of humans living with machines? Or is it a new, threatening reality? Below, you’ll discover everything that happened on the day.

Artists and musicians from the University of Southampton and around the world came together in a free, interactive, all-day showcase, featuring photography, fashion, literature, comedy and jazz, in a collection of installations, demonstrations, readings and discussions.

World-renowned French Orchestre Nationale de Jazz with special guest Steve Lehman joined us for an evening performance of Ex Machina to show cutting edge improvisations which brought musicians and machines together.

  • Parents and children met and interacted with an animal robot.
  • Attendees experienced a unique live interactive gallery performance.
  • Audiences enjoyed a laugh with fantastic local stand-up comedians and their take on the AI revolution.

And, Dame Wendy Hall took part in a lively panel discussion on AI and the arts and how we can live responsibly and in harmony with powerful machines:

‘Many of the conversations I am involved in to do with AI are around the dangers and threats it poses, the AI Arts Festival was a wonderful showcase of so many of the positives AI can offer. To see AI coming together with artistic ventures in such a breadth of ways made for a really entertaining event.’

The 2024 AI Arts Festival was hosted by the Web Science Institute in collaboration with the Winchester School of Art and the Southampton Institute for Arts and Humanities.
